Be Content with What You Have
Note from today’s Bible reading: Hebrews 12-13
The love of money is an age-old problem that affects people from all walks of life. It is destructive to the individuals who possess this attitude and has a negative impact on those around them. The more a society is infected with it, the more corrupt that society will be.
This is why the Hebrew writer issued this warning: “Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have…” (Hebrews 13:5). The problem is not with money itself, but with the lack of contentment. The reason is because a lack of contentment is an indication of a lack of trust in God.
So the Hebrew writer went on to explain why we are to be content: “For He Himself has said, ‘I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you,’ so that we confidently say, ‘The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid. What will man do to me?’” (Hebrews 13:5-6).
Money is often used as a way to gain the favor of others, to portray ourselves as being important, or to protect against potential threats. While there are legitimate uses of money, we need to recognize that the favor of God who blesses us is far more important.
So be content with what you have. God is the one who has blessed us with every good thing in this life and He has promised to be with us as long as we remain faithful to Him. No matter what happens in this life, we know that He can and will save us.
