Do All That the Lord Has Spoken
Note from today’s Bible reading: Exodus 24-27
After Moses met the Lord on the mountain to receive the law, he returned to the people and “recounted…all the words of the Lord and all the ordinances” (Exodus 24:3). Upon hearing this, the people made a promise: “All the words which the Lord has spoken we will do!” (Exodus 24:3).
Moses then wrote down the words of the law, offered burnt offerings, sprinkled blood on the altar, and read “the book of the covenant…in the hearing of the people.” They repeated their promise: “All that the Lord has spoken we will do, and we will be obedient!” (Exodus 24:7). This covenant between God and the people was then confirmed with the blood that was offered (Exodus 24:8).
This was a serious commitment by the people, yet a necessary one. They would need to diligently follow the Lord’s will, and God would hold them accountable for it.
We need to make the same commitment that the people of Israel made. We must be willing to do “all the words which the Lord has spoken.” In giving the Great Commission, Jesus explained that His disciples needed to be taught to “observe all that [He] commanded” (Matthew 28:20). This is not something to be taken lightly, either. He is “to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation” (Hebrews 5:9).
So do all that the Lord has spoken. He has not revealed His will to us for us to turn around and ignore it or disregard it as unimportant. Instead, we need to follow what His word teaches us and strive to please Him in all things.
