After Jesus told His disciples that Jerusalem was going to be destroyed, they asked Him later when this would happen (Mark 13:1-4). Jesus proceeded to detail several signs that would serve as warnings that the destruction of Jerusalem was near.
Jesus began by warning them, “See to it that no one misleads you. Many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am He!’ and will mislead many” (Mark 13:5-6). There would be “false Christs” that would come (Mark 13:22) and Jesus did not want them to be led astray.
While we generally do not have people claiming to be Christ today, there are many who claim to come “in [His] name,” speaking a message which they allege is of divine origin. Many are misled by such false teachers.
The only way that the disciples in the days leading up to the destruction of Jerusalem could know not to follow one of these “false Christs” was to understand and heed the words of Jesus. Today, the only way that we can keep from being led astray by false teachers who claim to come in the name of the Lord is to understand the words of Christ so that we can see the difference between truth and error.
So do not let others mislead you. Even though “many” may be misled, we do not need to be among that number. Before we believe any message from someone who claims to be speaking in the name of the Lord, let us first check the word of God in the Scriptures so that we can know what is true.
