The first miracle Jesus performed was at a wedding feast in Cana of Galilee (John 2:1-11). On that occasion He turned water to wine, saving the host family from embarrassment after the wine they prepared to serve had run out.
Before Jesus performed this miracle, His mother told the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it” (John 2:5). She surely did not know what He was going to tell them to do, but she knew they needed to listen to Him for the best possible result.
What Jesus told the servants to do would have seemed ridiculous to them – take six waterpots used for hand washing, fill them to the brim with water, draw some out, and – without testing it – take it to the headwaiter. Commendably, they obeyed. The result was that the water had been turned into wine – not just any wine, but it was better than what had been served previously.
When it comes to following Jesus’ instructions today, it is sometimes tempting to ignore something His word teaches because it does not “make sense” to us. However, His ways do not have to “make sense” to us before we obey. After all, He is God and we are merely human. We must follow His word even when we do not understand why a particular instruction was given.
So do whatever Jesus says to do. Sometimes we may see the reason behind a particular command and other times we may not. In either case, let us have enough faith in Him that we will simply obey what His word teaches us to do.
