When Jesus met a woman at a well in Samaria, He spoke with her about matters that were of spiritual importance. One of the topics they discussed was worship.
The woman asked Jesus about the difference between the Jews’ worship and the Samaritans’ worship (John 4:20). In His response, Jesus explained that the time was coming in which the place for worship was not going to be the primary consideration. Instead, He explained, “But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers” (John 4:23).
God is worthy of worship, yet He will not accept just any worship that is offered to Him. Jesus said that our worship is to be done “in spirit” (with the proper attitude and reverence for Him) “and truth” (according to the instructions found in His word).
Jesus emphasized the importance of this: “God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth” (John 4:24). The way in which we worship God is not left up to us and however we choose to worship. We must worship in the way that will be pleasing to Him.
So remember that God is seeking worshipers. He is worthy of praise and desires the services we render unto Him. Yet we must worship Him with the proper attitude and actions so that God will accept our worship and be pleased with us.
