God's Law Must Be Written on Our Heart
Note from today’s Bible reading: Hebrews 7-8
In contrasting the old and new covenants, the Hebrew writer cited a prophecy from Jeremiah that pointed to the fact that God had planned to enact a new covenant with His people (Hebrews 8:8-12; Jeremiah 31:31-34). One way in which the superiority of the new covenant could be seen was in the fact that God would “remember their sins no more” (Hebrews 8:12). Previously there was “a reminder of sins year by year” (Hebrews 10:3).
This great blessing of God’s mercy and forgiveness requires something of us in terms of how we receive the law of God. The quoted prophecy stated, “I will put My laws into their minds, and I will write them on their hearts, and I will be their God, and they shall be My people” (Hebrews 8:10).
In order to have God’s word in our minds, we must pay attention to it and not let the things around us crowd out His instructions (Hebrews 2:1; cf. Luke 8:14). In order to have His law on our hearts, we must take the time and effort needed to read and study it (2 Timothy 2:15).
So remember that God’s law must be written on our heart. This will not happen miraculously, nor will it happen by accident. We must be intentional about growing in knowledge and understanding of His will, and be diligent in our efforts to do so.
