Peter, James, and John accompanied Jesus up on a high mountain where they witnessed Jesus being “transfigured before them; and His face shone like the sun, and His garments became white as light” (Matthew 17:1-2). They also saw “Moses and Elijah…talking with [Jesus]” (Matthew 17:3).
This was an amazing event these three disciples had the privilege of witnessing! Peter wanted to honor each one by making “three tabernacles here, one for [Jesus], and one for Moses, and one for Elijah” (Matthew 17:4).
Peter surely meant well, but he was interrupted by a voice from heaven: “This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased; listen to Him!” (Matthew 17:5). When they looked up, only Jesus was standing there (Matthew 17:8). Moses (who delivered the old law) and Elijah (along with the rest of the Old Testament prophets) played a vital role in God’s plan. Yet Jesus was now the one they were to listen to. This is still true for us today.
So listen to Jesus. Even a sincere attempt to serve the Lord will fall short if we fail to recognize the authority of Christ and His word. Let us make sure we are following His will in all things.
