Make a Covenant before the Lord

Note from today’s Bible reading: 2 Kings 22-23; 2 Chronicles 34-35

When Josiah was king over Judah, he arranged for the temple to be repaired (2 Kings 22:3-7). While the workmen were working in the house of God, they found the book of the law and brought it to the king (2 Kings 22:8-10).

After hearing the law read to him, Josiah mourned because of their failure to keep the commandments of God (2 Kings 22:11-13). Their failure to obey is not surprising since they did not have the book of the law to consult. However, Josiah knew that this needed to be corrected immediately.

Josiah gathered all of the people and read the law to them (2 Kings 23:2). The king then “made a covenant before the Lord, to walk after the Lord, and to keep His commandments and His testimonies and His statutes with all his heart and all his soul…” (2 Kings 23:3). The people also “entered into the covenant” (2 Kings 23:3).

As a result of this, real reforms were carried out, and God delayed His judgment against the nation over their sins. Josiah’s wholehearted commitment to obey whatever the Lord commanded was remarkable. It is the same attitude and commitment that we need to have today.

So make a covenant before the Lord. Commit to doing His will no matter what mistakes and shortcomings are in your past. If we will walk with the Lord in the way He has shown us in His word, we can enjoy the blessings that come from being in fellowship with Him.
