Pay Attention to God's Word
Note from today’s Bible reading: Hebrews 1-2
Anything we learn – no matter how important we consider it to be – will eventually slip from our minds and be forgotten if we are not continually being reminded about and using what we learned. It is no different when it comes to learning the word of God.
In fact, the Hebrew writer warned about this danger. He said, “For this reason we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it” (Hebrews 2:1). It is good and necessary for us to hear, believe, and obey what the word of God teaches. However, if we do not remain committed to following it, we will slowly turn away from God’s word and back to the world.
To emphasize how important this is, the Hebrew writer reminded his readers of those who were under the old law when “every transgression and disobedience received a just penalty” (Hebrews 3:2). He then asked the question, “How will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation?” (Hebrews 3:3).
The theme of the book of Hebrews is that Christ and His ways are better than everything under the old covenant. Yet even though we have something better than what they had, God will still hold us accountable if we fail to live up to His standard. If we continue in sin and disobedience, we can expect a “just penalty” as well.
So pay attention to God’s word. There are many things in this life to distract us. Let us remain focused on God’s word and committed to continue doing what He has instructed us to do.
