Paul reminded the Corinthians about the Israelites who were led by Moses out of Egypt and taken care of by God in the wilderness (1 Corinthians 10:1-4). Despite their deliverance from Egyptian bondage, they acted in such a way that caused them to fall in the wilderness (1 Corinthians 10:5).
This was left as an example for them (and for us). Christians are not to “crave evil things as they also craved,” become “idolaters,” “act immorally,” “try [or test] the Lord,” or “grumble” against Him (1 Corinthians 10:6-10). The Israelites who were led out of Egypt were guilty of these things. Even though they were God’s people, they were punished and failed to reach the promised reward.
Paul explained, “Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come. Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall” (1 Corinthians 10:11-12).
It is tempting to think that we would never do as they did. We may suppose that since we have been saved by Christ, we would never turn our backs on Him. Yet Paul warned them (and us) that we must not become overconfident. Just as they fell in the wilderness, we could fall away from the Lord.
So take heed that you do not fall. We have many great blessings in Christ and the hope of eternal life. Yet we must continue to be vigilant to guard against sin and keep following the Lord.
Very good reminders, Andy. Thanks,
Wayne
