The Fear of the Lord Is Wisdom
Note from today’s Bible reading: Job 28-31
Job posed the question: “Where can wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding?” (Job 28:12). Throughout history, man has searched for wisdom. Many recognize its great value. “Pure gold cannot be given in exchange for it, nor can silver be weighed as its price” (Job 28:15).
So where can wisdom be found? And what do we need to possess in order to obtain wisdom? Job said, “God understands its way, and He knows its place” (Job 28:23).
Because God is the creator of all things, wisdom – true wisdom –may be found with Him. He alone can impart it to us through what He has revealed. But how can we obtain it? Job continued, “And to man He said, ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to depart from evil is understanding’” (Job 28:28).
The wise man echoed this sentiment: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding” (Proverbs 9:10). We must first acknowledge who God is, recognize His greatness and our place before Him, and humbly submit to His will. Only then will we be able to obtain wisdom.
So remember that the fear of the Lord is wisdom. Rather than pursuing the wisdom of the world around us, let us seek after the wisdom that God has revealed to us. Though it is extraordinarily valuable, we do not need the riches of this world to obtain it; we simply need the proper attitude.
