At different times during His earthly ministry, Jesus told His disciples what was going to happen in the future. Mark recorded one occasion when Jesus indicated a time frame in which He would establish His kingdom.
“And Jesus was saying to them, ‘Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God after it has come with power’” (Mark 9:1). While Jesus did not reveal an exact date as to when His kingdom would be established, He did provide some insight as to when it would happen.
First, it would be in the lifetime of “some” of His disciples. The first one to die was Judas who killed himself after betraying Jesus (Matthew 27:3-5). The last one to die was likely John who lived until near the end of the first century. So the kingdom would come during that time period.
Second, the kingdom would “come with power.” Jesus explained later to His disciples that they would “receive power when the Holy Spirit [had] come upon [them]” (Acts 1:8). This happened on the day of Pentecost following Jesus’ resurrection and ascension (Acts 2:1-4). This led to the establishment of the church (Acts 2:47) which Jesus also referred to as the kingdom (Matthew 16:18-19).
So the kingdom has come. We see it in visible form in the church that is made up of His people. Rather than look for a future kingdom to be established, as many religious people are doing, let us serve the Lord in His kingdom today.
