When Jesus was by the lake of Gennesaret, a crowd gathered around to listen to Him teach (Luke 5:1). Eventually He got into Simon’s boat and “asked him to put out a little way from the land” – perhaps so He could be seen and heard better by the crowd – and taught from the boat (Luke 5:3).
Afterward, Jesus told Simon to take the boat out to deep water and let down his nets for a catch. Simon replied, “Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but I will do as You say and let down the nets” (Luke 5:5).
Simon was an experienced fisherman. He probably knew much more about fishing than the average person. However, he evidently understood by this point that Jesus was not some average person. So he followed Jesus’ instruction and caught such a large number of fish that the nets began to break and they filled his boat and another boat with so many fish that they began to sink.
We may have experience and training in various fields, but we will never be smarter than the Lord. When His word affects whatever work we are doing, we do not need to think we have a “better” way; we simply need to do what He instructs us to do.
So remember that the Lord knows more than we do. Rather than trying to improve upon His word, we simply need to follow it. Instead of disregarding something He teaches because we think we “know better,” let us have the humility to just accept His word and obey it.
