Throughout Matthew 13, Jesus used various parables to explain different aspects of His kingdom. Two of the shorter parables in the chapter describe the value of this kingdom.
“The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found and hid again; and from the joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking fine pearls, and upon finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it” (Matthew 13:44-46).
Both parables are very similar. An item of great value is discovered and the one who found it was willing to sell everything in order to obtain that item. Jesus’ point is simple: His kingdom is worth more than anything we may have to give up in order to be a part of it.
We are often tempted by the material things of this life. We want what others have and desire what we could never afford. Yet the Lord’s kingdom is worth far more than any of that. Because of this, we should be willing to sacrifice anything – jobs, hobbies, wealth, relationships, and so on – that hinder us in our pursuit of His kingdom.
So remember the value of the kingdom. Many people make their wealth, status, career, or relationships their highest priority; yet these need to be kept in their proper place. Once we find the Lord’s kingdom, we need to recognize that there is nothing more valuable than that.
