When Jesus was twelve years old, He went with his parents to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover (Luke 2:41-42). When the Feast was over, His parents left but Jesus stayed behind (Luke 2:43).
However, His parents did not know that Jesus remained in Jerusalem. As they were traveling in a caravan with their relatives and acquaintances, they assumed He was somewhere in the group. When they noticed He was not there, they returned to Jerusalem and spent three days looking for Him (Luke 2:43-46).
Finally, they “found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard Him were amazed at His understanding and His answers” (Luke 2:46-47). When His mother questioned Him, Jesus responded, “Why is it that you were looking for Me? Did you not know that I had to be in My Father’s house?” (Luke 2:49).
Though the parents of Jesus did not understand His statement at the time, the point He was making would later appear obvious. He was (and is) the Son of God. He can be found where we find God the Father.
So remember that to find Jesus, we need to look in the right place. Many have a false concept of Jesus that completely separates Him from God the Father and the place of religious devotion. We will not find Him by looking just anywhere in the world; we need to look where He is – with His Father.
