On one occasion when Jesus was teaching, a woman in the crowd called out in order to praise the mother of Jesus: “Blessed is the womb that bore You and the breasts at which You nursed” (Luke 11:27).
Motherhood is a praiseworthy work. Not only was Mary deserving of honor as a mother, she was also in the privileged position of nurturing the Son of God who had come in the flesh. Therefore, this woman in the crowd – as well as many people today – regard the mother of Jesus as being worthy of special praise.
However, notice Jesus’ response: “On the contrary, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it” (Luke 11:28). He was not disregarding the role that Mary had in God’s plan (though many elevate her to the level of deity which is never done in the Scriptures). Instead, Jesus was emphasizing the role that each one of us has in God’s plan.
What are we to be doing? Jesus said we are to “hear the word of God and observe it.” No matter who we are, we can all do this if we will be willing to humble ourselves before Him.
So remember that we are blessed when we obey the Lord. Let us recognize the great privilege we have to be part of the Lord’s plan. The mother of Jesus fulfilled her role, let us focus on fulfilling ours as well.
