We Are Greater When God Is with Us
Note from today’s Bible reading: Psalm 102-104; 2 Samuel 5:1-10; 1 Chronicles 11-12
For a short time after the death of King Saul, there was a dispute over who would rule over Israel. Samuel had anointed David as God’s choice to succeed Saul. Yet Saul’s son Ish-bosheth also attempted to take control of the nation.
However, before long, Ish-bosheth was dead. After this, “all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron” and “anointed David King over Israel” (2 Samuel 5:1-3). He now had the support of the whole nation.
While it was important to have the people united behind him, another factor was the primary contributor to David’s success. The Scripture says, “David became greater and greater, for the Lord God of hosts was with him” (2 Samuel 5:10).
There is certainly strength in numbers. We can accomplish more together than we could alone. Yet if we compromise our convictions in order to remain on the side of the majority and it separates us from God, we have made a disastrous decision. Being on the Lord’s side needs to be of primary importance.
So remember that we are greater when God is with us. Rather than pursuing what is popular, we must strive to do what is right. No matter what circumstances we find ourselves in, we will always be better off with the Lord.
