During His time on earth, Jesus went “from one city and village to another, proclaiming and preaching the kingdom of God” (Luke 8:1). His twelve disciples were with Him as He was preparing them to do the same work later.
Along with the twelve, there were others who were there as well – “some women who had been healed of evil spirits and sicknesses” (Luke 8:2-3). Not only did they have the privilege and benefit of being with Jesus, they were also in a position to provide direct help and support to the Lord and His disciples.
Yet Luke also recorded that others were aiding Jesus in His ministry: “Many others…were contributing to their support out of their private means” (Luke 8:3). They may not have been able to do the work Jesus was doing, but they could provide monetary support that would help make His work possible. By using their “private means” for this, they demonstrated a willingness to make sacrifices in order to help further the Lord’s work.
There may be times in which we think we have little we can contribute to the cause of the Lord. Perhaps we are hindered by age, illness, family situations, secular employment, or other reasons from being directly involved in what we wish we could do. However, this was recorded for a reason. It shows that the contributions made to help support those doing the Lord’s work are both needed and valuable.
So remember that we can all contribute something. We should be directly involved in the Lord’s work to whatever degree we are able. Beyond that, we can also support others to help make their work more effective.
