When Jesus’ disciples asked Him who was the greatest in the kingdom, He brought a child before them as an illustration (Matthew 18:1-2). He said, “Truly I say to you, unless you are converted and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever then humbles himself as this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 18:3-4).
Today, if we tell people they are acting like children, our comment would be taken as an insult. The term is often used to describe one who is exhibiting immature behavior.
However, when Jesus used this term, He was referring to other characteristics of young children – their innocence, dependence, and ability to trust. Those who want to find a place in the Lord’s kingdom must keep themselves from sin, recognize their reliance upon God, and put their complete faith in Him. Those who will not do this are not fit for the Lord’s kingdom.
So we must become like children. Humbling ourselves in this manner is the only way to be at home with the Lord. The way to greatness is to adopt the character of those little ones who would never become great on their own.
